1852 "About 1852-55, Racheal Knight, daughter of a boarding house operator at St.John's, Nfld., married Jonas Newhook. They moved to Jacksons Cove soon after and were [the] first Newhooks there. With them, there moved from St. John's and settled in Jacksons Cove, three of her brothers, Jessie, Henry and Temple Knight. They were supposedly the first Knights north. (*This is contradicted by the Land Grant list unless the land was granted before the move and may have been for sawmill purposes.) After the boarding house burnt, the elderly proprietors moved to be with their children in Jacksons Cove and died there. (Must be John and Mary Ann.)" End Robert Knight's notes

Jan 2, 1860 "Extract of a letter received from St. John's, dated January 2, "I arrived on the 23rd December in 18 hours from Seldom-come-by. I suppose you are aware that CAMPBELL's schooner and another belonging to the Bay (Green Bay) were lost, with all hands, on their return home. They left St. John's, with supplies, on the 3rd November last; there were 19 souls in the two vessels. Mrs. CAMPBELL and her three sons were in their own craft; there were eleven married men in all. The vessel that left Harbor Grace for Green Bay had all arrived safe. The Times, KNIGHT master, with a cargo of provisions, was lost at Can Island, on her way to Green Bay. There are 30 families at the head of the Bay in a dreadful state of distress. Never in the history of Newfoundland were things so bad before. The Government are talking of doing something for their relief. Poor John CAMPBELL is left in a pitiable state, with seven small children, and nothing for them to eat." We feel confident the Government will at once (if they have not already done so) respond to this distressing call of humanity, and despatch one of the Tug Boats with provisions to save the lives of those unfortunate people. March 28, 1860 "Two Indians, named Abraham Joe, and Reubin Suleyan, Messengers to the Messrs. KNIGHTS, arrived at St. John's, from Hall's Bay, in Green Bay on the 19th inst.; they left Twillingate on the 25th of February last, and travelled a distance of 400 miles in 24 days. One of them arrived here on Saturday last in the 'Ellen Gisborne' from St. John's, who informed us that when he left Green Bay the people were in a starving condition, owing to the lamentable occurrence of last fall, but up to the date of his departure no deaths had occurred from want. They saw numbers of Deer on their route. No ice in Green Bay." Transcribed from "The Harbor Grace Standard and Conception Bay Advertiser" by Sue O'Neill March 14, 1866 "Capt. Henry KNIGHT, of whose safety fears had been entertained, arrived from Green Bay on Sunday last, having been frozen up there for some two months. Capt. K. reports no ice in the bays or runs. "Hello Allan, I have been helping a friend and distant cousin from the Langdon side of the family with his family tree. I was wondering if you could help with some background on my great-great-grandfather John Knight. The info that I have is that he was married to Mary Ann Vincent. I have info about his 10 children, including Henry (my great -grandfather and Temple your forefather. I was wondering what you can tell me about John and Mary Ann. Did they have siblings and who? Who were their parents? Where they were from. What was the dates of birth and death for John and Mary Ann and any of their parent that you know about. Anything you have would be appreciated. thanks. Nov, 2004 The Children of Henry and Sophie (Strong) Knight The photo was (probably) taken by Lorenzo Newhook, circa 1908. This was the year that planning began on building Jackson’s Cove Church. Henry (1830-1921) and Sophie (1841-1913) were married around 1865. At the time of this photo, Henry would have been 78 and Sophie 67. The age of each of the children in 1908 is indicated below. Back Row: Kenneth William (1877-1967), age 31, was a photographer and moved to Roberts Arm and Springdale, where he was postmaster. His part time occupations included fox farmer and Guide for American sportsmen on the Indian River. Ken was the founding Secretary of the Jackson’s Cove Church Building Committee, begun in 1908. He was married twice; to Fanny Batstone and Annie May Inder. Together, they had three children; Cyril, Everett and Bonnie. Henry Thomas (1872-1968), age 35, was a lifetime fisherman. He owned a woodworking shop and forge and became an accomplished craftsman in both venues. He turned the trimmings for Jackson’s Cove Church (and other Green Bay Churches) on his foot powered lathe. He was a life-long bachelor. Warwick Snowdon (1875-1958), age 33, was a master carpenter, employing his skills in the Green Bay area and for many years, in Grand Falls, where he would work between March and Christmas and then return to Jackson’s Cove to provide for his family by hunting, wood cutting, etc for the rest of the year. A life long hunter, he was a “crack shot” with a rifle, preferring the single shot 45/70. A very generous and community minded man, he was married twice; to Maggie Taylor and Martha Langdon. Together, they had six children; Madge, Harold, Dorothy, Lester, Fred and Charlie. John Wesley (1869-1942), age 37, was a fisherman and, for several years, a postmaster and telegraph operator, including in King’s Point. He married Katherine (Kit) Batstone. They had no children. Front Row: Wallace Adolphus (1884-1943), age 24, master carpenter and member of the team who built churches in Jackson’s Cove, Coachman’s Cove and Nippers Harbour, among many other buildings. He married Sadie Knight. They had two children; Val and Wannie. Samuel Armstrong (1869-1945), age 39, was a boat builder who included in his work the construction of several “gun” boats (used for birding and sealing). He was the founding Chairman of the Jackson’s Cove Church Building Committee. He acquired land and farmed for several years in Brierly, near Jackson’s Cove. Samuel was married twice; to Suzie Starkes and Maria Langdon. Together, they had nine children; Egbert, Selby, Ida, Beryl, Chester, Lloyd, Mabel, Emma and Suzie. Sara Ann (1865-1930), age 41, married John Robert Batstone. They had six children; Jimmy, Ella, Elton, Mack, Jane and Sophia. Dorman Gregory (1890-1972), age 18, was a life-long fisherman. He played the violin and made his own instruments. He married Nora Osmond. They had four children; Lemuel, Rex, Maxwell and Clayton. A ninth child, Theophilus David, was born two years after Ken, in 1879 and died in 1898. Best regards, Dennis
